Since 1986, MARKO JAPELJ has worked as a freelance set designer on nearly 200 performances. His first stage design was in 1986 for Hedda Gabler in Ljubljana’s Academy for Theatre and Film; his scenographic debut in professional theatre was the production of Three Sisters (Drama SNG Maribor, 1987). He has created set design for both opera and dance in Slovenia and abroad, among others, for the national theatres in Zagreb, Belgrade, Bucharest and Bratislava, Ballet Vlaanderen in Antwerp, Nederlands Dans Theater, Aalto Music Theatre in Essen, the theaters of Wuppertal, Dortmund and Augsburg, The Novosibirsk Opera and Ballet Theatre, the National Opera in Vienna, the Zurich Opera House and the West Australian Ballet. He worked with choreographer Valentina Turcu for the productions Tango, La Callas, Romeo and Juliet, Eugene Onegin a.o. He is the recipient of numerous awards for his work. From 1995 to 1997, he was a visting professor and a head of the Department of Theatre and Film Set Design at the University of Applied Arts Vienna.
