Jānis Liepiņš received his bachelor’s degrees in both choral and orchestral conducting from the J. Vītols Latvian Academy of Music. He gained considerable experience in masterclasses with Prof. Colin Metters, as well as from his studies in Berlin with Prof. Lutz Köhler. Jānis Liepiņš debuted at the Latvian National Opera in 2014 with Giuseppe Verdi’s opera Il trovatore.
Along with conducting repertoire performances, Jānis Liepiņš was the musical director for new productions of Glazunov’s ballet Raymonda, J. Strauss’ operetta Die Fledermaus, Bizet’s opera Carmen and I. Stravinsky’s opera The Rake’s Progress. In 2018 he assisted world-famous conductor Daniel Oren in a concert performance of Verdi’s Ernani at the LNO. Jānis Liepiņš has worked with all of Latvia’s professional symphony orchestras. In 2017 he debuted on the conductor’s podium with the Russian National Orchestra in Moscow. He assisted noted conductor Alexander Vedernikov with a production of The Queen of Spades as part of the Savonlinna Opera Festival in Finland (2018). He was the artistic director and chief conductor for the youth choir Kamēr... from 2012 to 2018. His accomplishments were recognised in 2013 at the Great Music Awards where he was won New Artist of The Year and received the Annual Award in Culture which was established by Latvia’s largest daily newspaper, Diena.
