JĀNIS LIEPIŅŠ received his bachelor’s degrees in choral and orchestral conducting from the J. Vītols Latvian Academy of Music. He also received valuable instruction attending masterclasses with Prof. Colin Metters and from studies in Berlin with Prof. Lutz Köhler. He has been a conductor with the Latvian National Opera and Ballet since 2014. His repertoire includes the operas Carmen, Eugene Onegin, Il trovatore, Le Villi. Gianni Schicchi, The Rose of Turaida (Z. Liepiņš) and the operetta Die Fledermaus, as well as the ballets Raymonda, Romeo and Juliet, Scheherazade and her Tales, and La Bayadere. This season he also assisted world-famous conductor Daniel Oren for the Latvian National Opera’s concert performance of Verdi’s opera Ernani. The conductor has worked with all of the professional orchestras in Latvia and in 2017 made his debut on the conductor’s podium with the Russian National Symphony Orchestra in Moscow. Jānis Liepiņš has been the artistic director and chief conductor for the youth choir Kamēr... since 2012. His accomplishments were recognised in 2013 with a Grand Music Award as the Year’s New Artist and with the Annual Award in Culture established by Latvia’s largest daily newspaper, Diena.
