Alex Brok (Alex Brok Light Design) is a Dutch lighting designer. He studied Theatre Design at the Amsterdam School of the Arts. In 1999, he moved to the United States, where he taught lighting design at Stanford University and created lighting for a number of productions at the university’s theatre department. He subsequently worked on several productions at San Francisco Opera. In 2003, one of his designs was selected for exhibition at the Prague Quadrennial of Performance Design and Space.
After returning to the Netherlands, Alex Brok established an international career as a lighting designer for opera, theatre, dance and musical theatre productions across Europe. His extensive repertoire includes works such as Così fan tutte, Le nozze di Figaro, Don Giovanni, Aida, Don Carlos, Il trovatore, Alcina, Carmen, Les contes d’Hoffmann, L’elisir d’amore, Die Zauberflöte, L’incoronazione di Poppea, Death in Venice, Dialogues des Carmélites, Gianni Schicchi, Dido and Aeneas, Hänsel und Gretel, La bohème, Agrippina, Jenůfa, Il trittico, Der fliegende Holländer, Il barbiere di Siviglia and Lulu.
In recent years, he has been resident lighting designer at the Volksoper Wien, where he has created lighting for numerous opera, ballet and musical theatre productions.
Among his recent projects are Il trittico at the Bayerische Staatsoper, Don Carlos at Staatsoper Stuttgart and Aida at the Opéra national de Paris, all directed by Lotte de Beer; Così fan tutte at the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino with Sven-Eric Bechtolf; and Dubarry and Im weißen Rössl at the Volksoper Wien with Jan Philipp Gloger. At Dailes Theatre, he worked with Ola Mafaalani on Drive Your Plow Over the Bones of the Dead, a production nominated for five Latvian theatre awards, as well as with Viesturs Kairišs on The Fountainhead.
