Jāzeps Vītols International Vocal Competition is the most recognized and prestigious vocal competition in Latvia. It commenced in 1995 and, unlike its other two categories (piano performance and conducting), was dormant for a period of 10 years since 2004. Despite this substantial pause, the competition is still remembered by its participants as excellently organized and exciting. We are glad to announce that the prizewinner of the previous competition Maija Kovaļevska has agreed to chair the jury of the upcoming competition.
The participants of Jāzeps Vītols International Vocal Competition will demonstrate their chamber and opera singing skills in a wide variety of repertoire – from operas, cantatas or oratorios by the 17th and 18th century composers to contemporary operas and songs by the composers of participants’ home countries. In the first round each participant amongst other pieces will perform a solo song by Jāzeps Vītols.
The competition coincides with two international events that take place in Riga and are related to vocal arts. In the beginning of June the Latvian National Opera will invite many local and foreign admirers of opera music to its annual Opera Festival, while from June 18 to 21 Riga will host the congress of the European Vocal Teachers’ Association Eurovox2015. Singing teachers from the whole Europe will attend the congress, therefore ensuring the presence and attention of a great number of professionals at the vocal competition.
