Edmunds Freibergs

Stage Director

Director Edmunds Freibergs produced Z. Liepiņš’s and K. Dimiters’ Parīzes Dievmātes katedrāli at the Latvian National Opera in 1997. Since 1974 he has worked as an actor, director, and artistic director at the Latvian National Theatre – where he currently works as its stage director. His repertory includes numerous stage productions, concerts and musicals, such as My Fair Lady, Indriķa hronika, Sfinksa, Vadonis, Leo. Pēdejā bohēma and Bāskervilu leģenda. He also directed the operas La traviata (2012), Otello (2013) and Carmen (2014) for the International Sigulda Opera Music Festival. While working in Paris at the Théâtre Le Lucernaire, he collaborated on projects with French directors.

Freibergs has worked as a professor at the Latvian Academy of Culture since 1998. He taught master courses in directing and acting in the Theatre Department at the Jāzeps Vītols Latvian Academy of Music (1978 – 1993) and served as head of the Theatre Department from 1985 – 1993. He is a recipient of the Order of the Three Stars, as well as a recipient of the A. Pumpuris Prize and the A. Amtmanis Briedītis Prize.
