Madara Botmane is one of the most compelling stage artists and costume designers in Latvia. Since her striking debut collection Nesejas Esejas at the Latvian Art Academy fashion show in 2016 she has created costumes for performances at the Latvian National Theatre, the Daile Theatre, the Liepāja Theatre, the Valmiera Drama Theatre as well as for the Ģertrūdes Ielas Theatre. She was nominated as Costume Designer of the Year at the 2017 Theatre Awards, Spēlmaņu nakts, for her work on the production Mazais ganiņš at the Latvian National Theatre. Thanks to her long experience as an actress at the Latvian National Theatre, where she has performed since 2011, and her thorough understanding of theatre, the artist’s costumes are always well-adapted to a production’s dramaturgy and highlight the unique character of each role.
In 2016 Botmane created the costumes for dancer Elza Leimane and composer Reinis Sējāns’ production Vārna at the Latvian National Opera. In 2017 she created the costumes for the music video of Linda Leen’s song Who Is in Charge, and in 2018 created t-shirts with quotations by Latvian authors which were available at the Latvian stall at that year’s London Book Fair. In 2019 together with the choreographer Elza Leimane they created the ballet Tell me (no) tales.
