The Riga Opera Festival 2014
The annual Riga Opera Festival takes place at the Latvian National Opera from June 3 to 15.
This year’s Festival includes new productions of the season – Richard Wagner’s opus in images Rienzi. Rise and Fall (June3 and15), Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s Le nozze di Figaro (June 5 and 11), Sergei Prokofiev’s The Love for Three Oranges (June 6 and 12), Giuseppe Verdi’s Il trovatore (June 7 and 14), and Kristaps Pētersons’s Mikhail and Mikhail Play Chess (June 7 and 10), as well as Gateano Donizetti’s opera Lucia di Lammermoor (June 4 and 13).
Two productions – Rienzi. Rise and Fall and Mikhail and Mikhail Play Chess - are from a playbillof the Riga 2014 – Cultural Capital of Europe.
The Riga Opera Festival, founded in 1998 as the first festival of its size and scale in Eastern Europe, has become a valuable tradition. The Festival is highly anticipated by both Latvian audiences and opera-lovers from abroad who form the biggest part of all Riga Opera Festival’s visitors. Every summer, the Festival marks the end of the Latvian National Opera’s performance season with an overview of the best moments of the previous season,offering fans a chance to relive their favourite scenes or see what they’ve missed.The high quality of the opera's productions has been noted outside of the country, and has helped the opera to draw brilliant guest conductors and soloists to Riga.
Next year, the Riga Opera Festival 2015 will be dedicated to Giaccomo Puccini.
