Energy efficiency improvement works at LNOB

The Latvian National Opera (LNOB) has signed a contract with Pillar Contractor Ltd. for the implementation of energy efficiency improvements in the opera’s historical building, funded by the European Union’s Recovery and Resilience Facility.

By 29 May 2026, renovation works will be carried out in the historic wing of the opera house, including the restoration of ventilation, heating and heat distribution systems – such as the replacement of radiators and other heating elements – along with the upgrade and automation of the electrical supply system. The project will also include insulation of the roof structures above the opera’s public areas and the workshop, as well as the renovation of water supply and sewage systems. Where necessary, the works will also involve the restoration of the building’s historic interiors.

This will be the most significant investment in the Latvian National Opera building since its reconstruction in the early 1990s, with the total costs estimated at €12.21 million. Of this, €11.67 will be financed through the European Union’s Recovery and Resilience Facility under Plan 1.2, “Improving Energy Efficiency,” specifically investment 1.2.1.4.i. - Improving the energy efficiency of public sector buildings, including historic buildings. The project will also be co-financed by LNOB’s own funds.

Since the historic opera house is a national architectural monument in Latvia, particular attention during the reconstruction will be paid to implementing energy efficiency measures in line with recommendations from the artistic and technical survey. This includes restoring selected interior spaces as required.
