Andrejs Žagars receives the Cross of Officer of the Order for Merits to Lithuania
Invited by President of the Republic of Lithuania Dalia Grybauskaitė, Latvian President Valdis Zatlers with wife Lilita Zatlere arrived in Lithuania on a state visit. This is the first state visit of the Latvian President in the past ten years. In the bilateral meeting, the Presidents of Lithuania and Latvia discussed relations and cooperation between the two states within the European Union and NATO.
The Heads of State exchanged the highest state decorations as an award for personal contributions to the development of Lithuanian-Latvian relations and to the improvement of political, cultural, economic and people-to-people cooperation. President Valdis Zatlers awarded the Lithuanian President with the First Class Order of the Three Stars with the Chain. President Dalia Grybauskaitė decorated the Latvian President with the Order of Vytautas the Great with the Golden Chain. Lilita Zatlere was decorated with the Grand Cross of the Order of Vytautas the Great.
A number of other people of merit were awarded by the President of Lithuania for their contribution to the development of bilateral relations between the two states: Mr. Jānis Stradiņš, Chair of the Senate of the Latvian Academy of Sciences, Professor – with the Cross of Commander of the Order for Merits to Lithuania, Ms. Laimute Balode, Associated Professor of Baltic Linguistics at the Faculty of Humanities at the University of Latvia, Head of the Lithuanian Studies Centre, Ms. Dace Markus, Rector of Riga Teacher Training and Educational Management Academy, Professor, Ms. Rūta Muktupāvela, Associated Professor at the Latvian Academy of Culture, Mr. Romualds Ražuks, Chairman of the Minorities Consulting Council of the President of Latvia, and Andrejs Žagars, General Director of the Latvian National Opera – with the Cross of Officer of the Order for Merits to Lithuania.
