Born in Mexico City, RODRIGO PORRAS GARULO studied voice at the University Mozarteum in Salzburg, Austria. Mr. Porras Garulo is a winner of the International Antonín Dvořák Singing Competition and scholarship holder of the Richard Wagner Association. He was nominated as Singer Of The Year by music critic Michael Stallknecht in Opernwelt Magazine due to his interpretation of Calaf in Turandot at State Theater Karlsruhe. From 2010 to 2015 he was a company member of the South Thuringen State Opera and from 2017 to 2020 of the State Theater Karlsruhe.
The soloist’s repertoire includes the roles of Alfredo (G. Verdi – La Traviata), Duca (G. Verdi – Rigoletto), Rinuccio (G. Puccini – Gianni Schicchi), Tamino (W. A. Mozart – The Magic Flute), Claudio (R. Wagner – The Love Ban), Jacopo Foscari (G. Verdi – The Two Foscari), Don José (G. Bizet – Carmen), Cavaradossi (G. Puccini – Tosca), Maurizio (F. Cilea – Adriana Lecouvreur), Gabriele Adorno (G. Verdi – Simon Boccanegra), Turiddu (P. Mascagni – Cavalleria Rusticana), Hofmann (J. Offenbach – The Tales of Hoffmann), Calaf (G. Puccini – Turandot), Max (C. von Weber – Der Freischütz), Rodolfo (G. Verdi – Luisa Miller), Walter von der Vogelweide (R. Wagner – Tannhäuser), the title role in Lehar’s operetta Zarewitsch, and many leading tenor parts in German operas and operettas. Rodrigo Porras Garullo has performed in festivals in Europe, Opéra de Tours, State Theater Schwerin, Opera Leipzig, State Operetta Dresden, Oper Wuppertal, Theatre Nebia in Bienne, Switzerland and elsewhere.
Rodrigo Porras Garulo stars as Mark in the opening production of 2022 Glyndebourne Festival The Wreckers by Ethel Smyth under the baton of Robin Ticciati with the London Philharmonic Orchestra. Highlights of his 2021/22 Season include Rodolfo in La Boheme at Landestheater Linz, as well as his debut as Don Carlo in the new production at the Hessian State Theater Wiesbaden. Further Mr. Porras Garulo will return as Don José in Carmen to the State Opera Hanover, where he was previously acclaimed as Cavaradossi in Tosca and Tristan in Le Vin Herbe. On the concert stage he will sing the Tenor Solo in Verdi‘s Requiem at Brucknerhaus Linz.
