Andris Veismanis

Andris Veismanis is the Conductor of the operahouse; an Associate Professor at the Jāzeps Vītols Latvian Academy of Music, as well as the Artistic Director of the chamber choir Ave Sol and the Vidzeme Chamber Orchestra. Veismanis graduated from the Choir Conducting Department of the the J. Vītols Latvian Academy of Music where he studied in the class of prof. Imants Kokars, and received his Master’s degree from the class of prof. Jānis Dūmiņš. He studied symphonic and opera conducting with prof. Yuri Simonov and specialised in baroque music taught by William Christie. From 1989 to 1997, he toured with Sacrum, the chamber choir he founded which received the Grand Prix in an international competition in Budapest for a recording of Franz Liszt’s Via crucis. From 1997 to 2006, he was the Principal Chorus Master of the Latvian National Opera.

He received the Great Music Award for 1993 production of Henry Purcell’s opera Dido and Aeneas and for 1998 production of George Frideric Handel’s Alcina. Johann Sebastian Bach’s and Handel’s passions and oratorios are also an important part of his repertoire. The conductor has collaborated with many excellent soloists including Elīna Garanča, Anna Netrebko, Montserrat Caballe, Maija Kovaļevska, Aleksandrs Antoņenko, Kristīne Opolais and others.

Veismanis has given concerts in Taiwan, South America, the United States, Hong Kong, Canada, at the Bolshoi Theatre in Russia and in many place in Europe. He has conducted the premiere performances of many Latvian composers’ works, and has recorded several albums with the leading musicians from Latvia, Estonia and Lithuania. He has collaborated with the Latvian National Symphony Orchestra, the Lithuanian National Symphony Orchestra, the chamber orchestras Kremerata Baltica and Sinfonietta Rīga, the Liepāja Symphony Orchestra and other orchestras in Latvia. Andris Veismanis has received the Jāzeps Vītols Latvian Academy of Music Annual Award 2021 for outstanding pedagogical and creative work.
