French tenor Benjamin Bernheim has quickly emerged as an artist to watch, and has been heralded as “a revelation” with a distinctive voice that is “flawless and pure, ranging from delicate pianissimo to heroic fortissimo as required” (Opera News). Following his success as a member of the ensemble and as a resident artist at the Opernhaus Zürich, Bernheim is now featured in impressive debuts at renowned venues throughout Europe.
Last season Benjamin made his role début as Rodolfo in a new production of La bohème at the Opernhaus Zürich, made his première appearances at the Opéra National de Paris as Flamand in Capriccio, and sang Cassio in Otello at the Salzburg Easter Festival, Roméo in the Dutch premiere of Berlioz’s Roméo et Juliette at the Netherlands Opera, the Italian Tenor in Der Rosenkavalier as his début at Teatro alla Scala, and Nicias Thaïs at the Salzburg Festival.
Engagements in 2016/17 include Tebaldo (I Capuleti e i Montecchi), Cassio (Otello) and Rodolfo (La bohème) for Opernhaus Zurich, Lensky (Eugene Onegin) at Deutsche Oper Berlin, Rodolfo for Semperoper Dresden, Laerte (Hamlet) for Opera de Lausanne, performances of Die Schöpfung at the Deutsche Staatsoper Berlin, title role in Faust for Latvian National Opera and Alfredo (La Traviata) with Deutsche Oper Berlin. Benjamin will return to the Opera de Paris in 2017 and will make his debut at the Wiener Staatsoper, and at the Chicago Lyric Opera and the Berlin Staatsoper in 2018.
Recent highlights include Spakos in Cléopâtre from Massenet at the Salzburg Whitsun Festival 2012 under de baton of Vladimir Fedoseyev and at the Théâtre des Champs-Elysées under the direction of Michel Plasson, Agenore in Mozart’s Re Pastore at the Salzburg summer Festival 2012 under the direction of William Christie, Eginhard in Schubert’s Fierrabras at the Salzburg Summer Festival 2014, Benjamin also debuted at the Semperoper Dresden as Tamino in Die Zauberflöte and later on with Erik in Wagner’s Flying Dutchman, Tebaldo in I Capuleti e i Montecchi from Bellini under the direction of Fabio Luisi (DVD) and at the Whitsun Salzburg Festival Gala 2016 with Angela Ghiorghiu and Marco Armiliato.
Benjamin Bernheim studied with Gary Magby at the Lausanne Conservatoire, participated in masterclasses with Giacomo Aragall, and attended Carlo Bergonzi’s Accademia Verdiana in Busseto.
