It was first performed on 24 December, 1951, at the NBC television studios in New York City. The opera tells the story of a disabled boy and his overworked mother, who live in poverty in a desolate part of town. Regardless of his dreary surroundings, Amahl's imagination is vivid and full of wonder. He brings to life his fantasies by creating installations from pieces of plastic, metal, and broken toys found at the dump.
