Where is the brave soul who will guess the three riddles of the beautiful but icy Chinese princess Turandot? Will he ever appear, though he stands the risk of losing everything if he answers incorrectly? Of course; a hero always appears in the end. In this story, that hero is Prince Calaf, who arrives in Peking with love in his heart, ready to accept Turandot's challenge.
This production, more than thirty seasons at LNO, is an historical testimony to the renaissance of Latvian opera traditions in the 1970s. Captivating audiences from the very beginning with its direction and the harmony between the visual effects and music, the production continues to astonish opera-lovers with the beauty of its ethnographic stylization and eastern color.
