Aleksandrs Antoņenko

ALEKSANDRS ANTOŅENKO was born in Riga. In 1998 he graduated from the Jāzeps Mediņš College of Music where he played wind instruments and studied singing under Margarita Gruzdeva, who is still his vocal teacher and mentor. During his studies he became the winner of the Contest of Young Singers for Students of Musical Colleges (in 1993 and 1996). Aleksandrs Antoņenko has been a student at the Department of Vocal Music at the Latvian Academy of Music (the masterclass of Prof.Arvīds Imants Luste).

In 1997, Aleksandrs Antoņenko joined the Latvian National Opera as a member of the choir but just five months later: in 1998 he made his debut as a solo artist with the brilliantly executed part of Oberto in Handel's Alcina. In the following years Aleksandrs Antoņenko sang several highly complicated opera roles (Don Ottavio in Mozart's Don Giovanni, Lensky in Tchaikovsky's Eugene Onegin, Rodolfo in Puccini's La Bohème, Alfredo in Verdi's La Traviata, Eric in Wagner's Der fliegende Holländer) but also regularly took part in performances of large-scale pieces (Verdi's Requiem, Beethoven's Missa Solemnis and Symphony No 9).

Aleksandrs Antoņenko was the 2003 recipient of the Latvian Great Music Award for vocal performances in several opera productions and Verdi's Requiem. During the 2004/2005 season, Aleksandrs Antoņenko became the internationally most renowned of Latvian tenors, engaged by the world's most influential opera companies.

Since autumn 2004 he has performed at the Düsseldorf Deutsche Opera am Rhein where he sang Giuseppe Hagenbach in Catalani's La Wally among other roles, appeared as Mario Cavaradossi in Puccini's Tosca at the Berlin and Graz opera theatres, as José in Bizet's Carmen at the Dresden Semperoper and sung Des Grieux in Puccini's Manon Lescaut at the Oslo and Stockholm Royal Opera Theatres (in Stockholm with Inese Galante). Aleksandrs Antoņenko has also given guest performances in Israel, Poland. Estonia, Russia and Hong Kong.

In January 2006, Antoņenko made his debut as Sergey in the production of Dmitry Shostakovich's Lady Mcbeth of Mtsensk at the Latvian National Opera.

During the 2006/07 season, Aleksandrs Antonenko appeared at the Norske Opera in Oslo (Don José), the Deutsche Oper Berlin (Turiddu), the Opéra de Monte-Carlo (Turiddu) and at the Baden-Baden Festival (Cavaradossi). Aleksandrs Antonenko sang, among other roles, Gabriele Adorno (Simon Boccanegra) at the Frankfurt Opera and Ismaele in a new production of Nabucco at the Bavarian State Opera. As Verdi’s Otello he made his debut at the Salzburg Festival in summer 2008 in a new production under the baton of Maestro Riccardo Muti. He sang also a new production of Otello at the Teatro dell’Opera di Roma. In february 2009 he made his debut at the Metropolitan Opera New York in Rusalka (Prince with René Fleming) with a big success. In 2010 he sang at Wiener Staatsoper Pique Dame and Otello as well as in Valencia Turriddu in Cavalleria Rusticana and at the Metropolitan Opera a new production of Boris Godunov (Dimitri).

In 2011 he sang with Maestro Muti and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra Otello, a new production of Otello at Opera de Paris and a new production of Il Tabarro (Luigi) at Royal Opera House Covent Garden, furthermore a new production of Fanciulla del West in Stockholm under the stage director Christof Loy.

Further engagements include Tosca (Cavaradossi) and a new production Otello under the baton of Maestro Pappano at the Royal Opera House Covent Garden, Samson et Dalila at the Grand Theatre de Geneve, a new production of Aida (Radames) at Staatsoper Wien and also at Opernhaus Zürich as well as Trovatore (Manrico) with Maestro Barenboim at Staatsoper Berlin and a new production of Turandot (Kalaf) at La Scala di Milano.
He will sing a new production of Simon Boccanegra at the Semperoper Dresden under the baton of Maestro Thielemann, and productions of Carmen (José) and Norma (Pollione) and a new production Otello at the Metropolitan Opera New York.
